Since the inception of the automobile, cars, especially those who compete on a drag strip have been known for their stylish features. And people like Eddie Hollon from Boerne, Texas use their passion, creativity and artistic talents to shape these hot rods into the quickest accelerating works of art known to man.

Roy Hollon 1976Hollon is the son of Roy Hollon, a former drag boat racer, who made the cross over to asphalt racing in 1976 with his Pro Stock Dodge Challenger at Alamo Dragway in the mid to late 1970’s.  He then took on off road racing, mud drags and even tractor pulling with his son Eddie also competing in a second family entry. Eddie returned to the quarter mile in 1996 behind the wheel of a Super Pro 1969 Camaro. “I loved going to watch my Dad race in every motorsport possible and growing up around the track, I was able to see some really awesome designs,” Hollon said. “In all forms of racing, these cars are little works of art and I wanted to try to come up with my own ideas.”

Eddie's Orange CamaroThe man who draws his inspiration from legendary peers Scott Brown, Kenny Youngblood, Greg Ozubko and Rod Burke, began his illustration career as a creative child with crayons and paper. “I always used to draw cars as a kid,” noted Hollon who has lived in the San Antonio area his entire life. “While other kids were drawing houses, horses and people, I was coming up with cool colors for cars. It made those long, hot summer days much more tolerable.”

As Hollon grew older, his abilities began to improve. He started working at a paint and body shop in 1996, where he was hired to design customer cars. He honed his skills with paper, colored pencils and some air brushing for effect. Hollon began to dabble in computers roughly the same time and developed name recognition when he created templates for a new computer drag racing game. The NHRA Main Event video game, created and distributed by Value-Soft in the late 1990’s gave Hollon an idea which created a cult-like following of hard core drag racing fans. He drew a template of the cars by hand and created custom-made paint schemes for several of the cars featured in this game. There was actually a time when Hollon would receive hundreds of requests from die-hard drag racing fans to design their own colors for this game. It was his work with this game which drew the attention of an east coast sportsman category kingpin who hired Hollon to design a dragster for him.

Peter Biondo“In 2001, Peter Biondo called me up and asked me to come up with a color scheme for his dragster,” stated Hollon. “To this day, this car is one of my favorites I’ve done. I have to thank Peter for taking a chance on me back in the day. It has opened up several opportunities and I will always be eternally grateful for the chance.”
